Advice for Artists PART TWO: Licensing
Please read PART ONE too!
Licensing
Licensing is a funny thing. Many artists have been lead to believe that it’s a magic word and will make them rich and famous immediately because they see So and So’s art all over. That’s wrong. No one product or contract will do either for you.
1. Trust your instincts and don’t let jealousy get in the way. Just because you see someone else’s art on a product doesn’t mean you know it’s actually a good deal for them.
2. There are two aspects to product licensing: royalties and exposure for your art. Ideally you want both and if you get neither it’s no use at all. You get only small percentage of what the product sells for wholesale (i.e half the price you see in stores). Don’t let anyone tell you that licensing is going to make you rich OR that it’s just free advertising that you aren’t supposed to make any money from.

Advice for Artists PART ONE
Part one of two.
The Basics:
When artists are starting out we are often so eager to be published that we are happy for anything that comes out way and don't stop to think. Creative people love being told they are liked and wanted. This article is designed to help you avoid the pitfalls that inexperienced artists often encounter.
Unfinanced Entrepreneurs:
“Unfinanced Entrepreneurs” was term coined in an articles by Mark Evanier. These are people with grand plans and no track record to back in up. They draw you in with tall tales of how when their project is published it will be the next big thing and sell tons. They can’t pay you right now, but you’ll make plenty in royalties after it’s published.  Or worse they want you to work for “exposure”, because the commissions will come rolling in after their project has made you famous. They are working under the assumption that what you do is easy, quick and fun.  Remember, n

WIP - ArtRage5, Skin Tones
Work in progress, doing some sketching and skin-tone stuff this afternoon on the Ugee 2150. This shows how I paint skin--when I want it to be somewhat realistic. I almost always use three layers, a cool tone on the bottom, a warm tone on top, and a third layer for shadowing. I then use the burn tools and brushes to bring the blue through where the skin should be highlighted. 2 hours in ArtRage 5. SaltwaterWitch.com

Mermaid Triptych - Chris Howard
Mermaid Triptych: from left to right, "Mermaids Fucking with the Forecast", "Mermaids Discuss the Complexities of Global Shipping", and "A Mermaid and her Friendly Floatees".

Mermaids Fucking with the Forecast: after a particularly raucous underwater celebration, three sisters conjure up a real ship-tosser of a gale, complete with random bolts of lightning, cloud-riding ghost humpbacks, and several million dollars in damages.

Mermaids Discuss the Complexities of Global Shipping: there are millions of shipping containers on vessels on the oceans at any given moment, and for various reasons some of these are lost at sea en route, reported missing, and written off. Someone finds them, mainly because they don't sink right away. The World Shipping Council estimates that on average there are between 500 and 600 containers lost at sea each year--that's hundreds of forty-foot boxes of steel just tumbling over the side of the ship and into the ocean. (This doesn't include cases where the ships themselves sink or run aground. These catastrophic losses put the number of lost containers well over 2000.)

A Mermaid and her Friendly Floatees: In 1992 a container ship bound for the Port of Tacoma lost a container over the side in the middle of a storm in the Pacific Ocean, and almost 30,000 rubber ducks and various other floating animals were released to drift in the currents. As late as 2007, fifteen years later, people were still finding rubber ducks on the shores of Ireland and France, the Floatees having made their way through the Northern Passage, above Canada, around Greenland, and into the Atlantic. More here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friendly…

I painted these three in ArtRage4 and Photoshop CC, about twenty total hours.

I'm a fairly creative guy with a pen and a paint brush, author of Seaborn (Juno Books), Salvage (Masque, 2013), Nanowhere, and a shelf-full of other books. My short stories have appeared in a bunch of magazines and anthologies, including “Lost Dogs and Fireplace Archeology” in Fantasy Magazine, and ‘Tear Apart Worlds” in Pen-Ultimate. My story “Hammers and Snails” was a Robert A. Heinlein Centennial Short Fiction Contest winner. I write and illustrate the comic, Saltwater Witch. My ink work and digital illos have appeared in Shimmer, BuzzyMag, various RPGs, and on the pages and covers of books, blogs, and other interesting places. Last year I painted a 9 x 12 foot Steampunk Map of New York for a cafe in Brooklyn.

Two new pages up for SaltwaterWitch Comic 16!

This set features the start of an intense discussion between Kassandra and her grandmother--Kallixene. Even with Ephoros at her back, Kassandra's on thin ice, not certain about which direction to go with her new-found family.

A very joyous year's ride 'round the sun on Carousel Earth starting today, with the ups and downs so exciting and fun that you only laugh and hang on the harder! May a year from today find you wiser, more skilled, happier, and successful, and reaching out for the brass ring with a big smile, eager for another ride! May beauty and laughter be your constant companions. May your friends smile to see you, and strangers look at you with interested respect. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
